Charles County, MD

The Resilience Authority of Charles County, Inc. (Resilience Authority) was created by state and county legislation and is structured as an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit. We partner with the Charles County government to accelerate equitable, nature-based infrastructure solutions that strengthen community resilience and help mitigate and adapt to the risks of climate change.

The Resilience Authority operates for the public purpose of responding to the impacts of climate change in communities across Charles County.

Set a national example of climate resilience grounded in Environmental Justice.

• Equity: Real resilience recognizes that the risks of climate change are not shared equally; therefore, our work focuses on communities hurt first and worst by the hazards of a changing climate.

   

• Nature-Based: We prioritize equitable, environmentally just, projects that work with the power of Nature to build resilience with multiple benefits. 

   

• Investing in nature protects water supplies, supports agriculture through pollination, and provides sustainable, cost-effective infrastructure.  For example, native trees and forests are critical infrastructure, like roads or sewers, and their benefits (shade, pollution reduction, stormwater management) should be available to all. 

 

• Access to Nature: Equitable access to shaded, public green space is vital to community health and climate resilience. They cool urban areas, absorb stormwater, and bring people together to connect.  Healthy, connected communities are more resilient communities.
